Colleen J Dyson AFCA SCA

Being born and raised in the heart of the Okanagan Valley has offered Colleen many areas of inspiration. Her technique is still evolving. Painting realism for the first few years and earning a few awards was inspiring, but the need to push and grow was overwhelming for her at times. Changing her medium to oils at this time was very beneficial and she has never looked back.
Her travels to Costa Rica and the Canadian west coast have inspired her to step out of her comfort zone completely. Initially painting Still Life and Florals, she is now on to boats, seascapes, farms, vineyards, waterways, and figurative works. She and her art are works-in-progress, and will be for some time as she brings her new favourite big brushes to her painting style. These aren’t mere “pictures.” They are moments in time: short-lived and ephemeral, but once memorialized into an impassioned painting, able to be visited and relived on demand. Teaching Colour Theory along with her Black Canvas and Restricted Palette classes has added another element to her craft.
Colleen holds Signature Membership with the Federation of Canadian Artists (AFCA) and the Society of Canadian Artists (SCA). She belongs to several art organizations, and heads up a local art group. Her work can be found on numerous online Art Societies, as well as in private and corporate collections in Canada, the United States, Costa Rica, and the United Kingdom, and has been featured in a variety of publications.

“My work reflects my obsession with light and colour. I am intrigued by how light reveals form, creates pattern, and establishes mood. The drama of dark tones versus the magic of light ones, and how light diffuses, bleaches, or disappears to reveal the subtleties of colour. And in colour, the transition between harmonious colours, the vibration between warm and cool, and the shock of opposites.
After several years using a black canvas technique, I am now attempting to bring my work back to regular canvas using my bigger brushes and a stained canvas but in a more representational, impressionistic technique. My hope still is to exaggerate the darks and to satisfy my obsession with the light.”
