Colour Theory/Painting Workshop - September 23 & 24, 2017
Have you ever been in a painting workshop where you had no idea what the instructor was talking about and you realize that it's all way over your head? Or perhaps you have felt you weren't ready to attend a workshop? This workshop will give you the tools that will take you from your last drawing class to your first workshop with confidence and avoid the frustration. You will gain an understanding of key art terminology and techniques. Taking the time now to learn will definitely benefit you later on and allow you to participate in future workshops with confidence.
On the first day of this hands-on workshop, we will have fun learning most of the basics to get the student painting. We will do exercises to learn the characteristics of colour, colour terms, colour mixing charts, colour schemes and more. At the end of the day you will have made your own Colour Theory Journal that you can add to and refer to in the future. Plus, you will have the templates to make extra copies if needed.
On the second day, we will use the principles and techniques we learned the day before to make a painting. We will learn how to select a colour palette that "works", and to consider all the elements of design and composition in putting a painting together.
This workshop is aimed primarily at beginners and intermediate artists, but will also benefit more experienced painters. At the end of the day, we will line the paintings up and view them and you will be surprised at how well you have done! And I will be available for two full days after the workshop in case you remember the question that you forgot to ask in the class.
Shown here is an example of one of my paintings using a Restricted Palette. I used only five colours and a complement which keeps the painting harmonious and balanced. This workshop will definitely put you in this direction! So bring your lunch and supplies and prepare to be amazed!

New also for 2017 - Black Canvas Workshops
I paint almost exclusively on black canvas. It totally turns your thinking around when dealing with black canvas. It's exhilarating! You have total control of values, light, details, etc and you get to watch the magic happen. Check out my website at www.colleenjdyson.com to see my work. It's all done on black canvas. It's a whole different world!
My students are surprised with the black canvas workshop! They had no idea how their paintings would turn out. I have to say, they do extremely well, and I'm just tickled with that! Why not try one out for yourself? Email me, use the contact form below, or call me at 250-878-4344 to put your name on my list, more classes are coming soon.
Testimonials from some of the 2016 workshops:
These workshops were a a lot of fun. The participants thoroughly enjoyed them as they had the experience of putting the lessons from the colour theory classes into practice. They used the tips and techniques they had learned and were very pleased with their results.
"Many thanks for Part 2 of the Colour Theory workshop! Hands on helped to continue to experiment with depth, hue, value and temperature of colour and cement what we learned in class. With your assistance I can paint like a rockstar! I really appreciated the encouragement and the helpful tips!"
"I realized that I wanted to stay longer when it was time to leave. You are a great artist. As a learner I am wanting direction as we go along so I understand the details. I would recommend a two day workshop to keep us on our toes and have time to correct errors that can occur. Perhaps students should use black canvas if you are, so we will get the same effect. Thank you for a great workshop . From a beginner."
"Once again you provided a workshop that covered Colour Theory in a way for everyone to understand. Right from the basics of preparing your canvas to designing the painting and applying all that we learned to completing a finished painting. I enjoy the way you share your experiences with us and provide answers to our questions. I left your workshop with enthusiasm and eager to get started on another painting. Thank you for a great learning experience."
November 24, 2016 - 10:00 to 4:00
This was the last of the painting workshops series for this year. Here is the feedback I received from this class.
"When a person goes to any kind of seminar or class, you are always thrilled to come away with just one nugget that will help you in your next steps of growth. I can honestly say that I was totally blown away with all that I came away with from your class. In fact, my friend had to sit and listen to about an hour of my gushing with information I wanted to share. So what did I come away with...?
- how to keep a log book of paints and what colours were used,
- composition of a painting as far as colours - warms and cools - I took this to my new painting and it is coming out fabulous, and
- the use of a limited palette and the resulting tints, tones and shades.
Being "self-taught", I have a lot of catching up to do and with the two classes on Colour Theory you conducted, I have made a very big step in creating better paintings. I gladly give a high recommendation for anyone to take these sessions. Thank you again.
Keep watching for more of these painting workshops in the future.
